What we collect and why

If you join the waitlist

We store your email address, the platform you told us you use, the page or campaign you came from, and the time you signed up. That is the whole record. We keep it so we can email you when the app is ready and so we know which platform to build for first.

If you download the guide

We store your email address on the same early-access list, marked as coming from the guide, and you get the PDF straight away. Every email we send has an unsubscribe link.

If you use the app

• Your account. Your email address, and a password if you sign in with email. We store the password only in scrambled (hashed) form. If you sign in with Apple or Google once those options are switched on, we receive the account identifier and email address they share with us.
• Your profile. A nickname, and an avatar, which is either a Butty character or a photo you upload. Your birth year, which we use only to work out whether the under-18 rules apply to you. Your city and country, and your timezone, which the app sets from your phone unless you choose one.
• Your stool photos and their readings, as described in the photos section above, plus any Bristol type or colour you pick yourself.
• Your check-ins. Everything here is optional: pain, glasses of water, straining, urgency, whether it felt complete, hours of sleep, a diet note, and whether you took medication. This is health information about you, and we treat it that way.
• Your location, if you allow it. Each log stores the exact GPS point where it was taken, which only you can see, and the city it was in, worked out on your phone. Location is optional: if you say no, logs are saved without it.
• Your streaks and ranking, calculated from the days you logged.
• Your subscription. If you buy Butt Talks Plus, Apple sends us a signed record of the purchase, which we check with Apple's servers, and we keep it so we know when Plus is active. We never see your card or any payment details.
• Your reminder settings. Daily reminders are notifications scheduled on your phone, not sent from our servers. We save whether reminders are on and the time you picked, so they come back if you reinstall.
• Course progress: which lessons you have completed and when, so the next one can unlock.
• App analytics. Which screens and buttons were used, as described under cookies and analytics below, along with basic device details such as the app version and the kind of phone, so we can fix what breaks.

If you book a Nurse Wong session

Booking happens on an external booking service that the app opens in your browser. What you enter there is collected by that service under its own privacy policy, and we see only what is needed to hold the session.

If you tap a shop link

Shop items are Amazon affiliate links, and they open on Amazon. Amazon may record that you arrived from us and pays us a small commission if you buy. We do not see what you bought or anything about your Amazon account.

However you arrive

On this website, our analytics tell us which pages were viewed, which buttons were pressed, roughly where in the world the visit came from, and what kind of device it was on. We use it to work out which parts of the site are working. We do not sell it, and we do not use it to build advertising profiles.

We never sell your personal data, and we never share your photographs, your logs or your check-ins with advertisers, insurers or employers.

What other people can see

Butt Talks has leaderboards, so a few things about you are public inside the app. We would rather you know exactly which ones.

• Leaderboards and your public profile show your nickname, your avatar (your Butty or your uploaded photo), your current and best streaks, and your city. Never your real name, your email, your photos of poop or your check-ins.
• Your city comes from your profile, or from your recent logs if you have not set one. A city taken from your logs updates once a day rather than live. If you could be under 18, your city is never shown to anyone else.
• The world map shows how many logs come from each city, and only for cities where at least three people log, so a bubble cannot point to one person.
• Your poop map is private unless you choose to make it public, and only adults can. Even then, other people never see your exact points: they see counts in squares about 1 km across, and the map runs up to 2 days behind, so it cannot be used to follow you in real time.

You can turn off showing on leaderboards, keep your map private, or hide a particular person from your own view, at any time in the app.

Third parties who touch your data

We use a small number of companies to run the service. Each one gets only what its job needs.

• Database and storage. Supabase hosts our database, file storage, sign-in and server functions. It holds the early-access list and, in the app, your account, your profile, your logs and your photos.
• Hosting. Vercel hosts this website and handles the traffic that reaches it.
• AI classification. OpenRouter passes the stool photo you submit to a Google Gemini model, which returns a reading. Zero data retention is enforced on every request, as set out in the photos section above.
• Analytics. PostHog records the product analytics described below so we can see how the site and the app are used. On this website, Google Analytics records the same page views and button presses.
• Email delivery. Brevo sends the codes that confirm your email address and reset your password, and any email to the early-access list. It receives your email address and nothing from your logs.
• Purchases. Apple processes Butt Talks Plus subscriptions through the App Store, and Google through Google Play. We check each purchase with the store's servers and learn only what the subscription is and when it renews or ends.
• Sign-in. Apple and Google confirm who you are if you choose to sign in with them.

Some things in the app open other companies' services, which handle your data under their own policies: lesson videos play from YouTube in its privacy-enhanced mode, shop links open Amazon, and Nurse Wong bookings open an external booking site.

We will also disclose data if the law requires it, or to protect someone from harm. If the business is ever sold or merged, your data may move with it, and we will tell you before that happens.

Why we are allowed to do this

If you are in the UK, the EU or somewhere with similar law, these are the legal bases we rely on.

• Your explicit consent for health data. A photograph of your stool and your check-in answers are health data about you, so we process them only because you chose to log them. You can stop at any time, and you can delete any log.
• Your consent for location, which you can turn off in your phone settings, for making your map public, and for the early-access list, the guide and any marketing email.
• Performing our contract with you for running your account, the leaderboards you appear on, and your subscription.
• Our legitimate interests in keeping the service secure, fixing faults and understanding how the product is used, balanced against your privacy.
• Legal obligation where we have to keep records, for example for tax.

Data retention and deleting your account

Please read this part carefully, because deleting your account does not erase your data.

• Deleting a log removes that log, its location and its photo.
• Deleting your account in the app closes it permanently. You cannot sign in to it again, and your nickname, avatar, streaks, city and map are removed from leaderboards, public profiles and maps straight away.
• Your data is kept, not erased. Your logs, photos, check-ins, locations, profile and purchase records stay stored after the account is closed. Nobody can see them in the app, including you.
• If you want your data erased, email support@butttalkstv.com from the address on your account and ask. We will tell you what we can erase, and anything we have to keep, for example for tax. You can ask whether or not you have deleted your account first.
• Early-access emails stay until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove you, or until the launch they were collected for is done.
• Analytics is kept for as long as it is useful for product decisions.
• Billing and tax records are kept for as long as the law requires.

If you have Butt Talks Plus, deleting your account does not cancel it. Cancel the subscription in your App Store or Google Play settings as well.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, the law gives you some or all of these rights. Wherever you are, you can ask, and we will not make it difficult.

• Access. A copy of the personal data we hold about you.
• Deletion. Erasure of your data. You can delete a log yourself in the app. Deleting your account in the app keeps your data, so to have it erased, write to us.
• Correction of anything we hold that is wrong. Most of it you can change yourself in the app.
• Portability. A copy of your logs in a file you can take elsewhere, sent on request.
• Objection and restriction. Ask us to stop or pause a particular use of your data.
• Withdrawing consent at any time, without affecting anything we did before you withdrew it.
• No discrimination. Using any of these rights will never get you a worse price or a worse service.

Write to support@butttalkstv.com and we will respond within one month. We may need to check that the request really came from you, since these are your health records. If you are unhappy with how we handled it, you can complain to your local data protection authority.

Cookies and analytics

This website uses cookies and similar storage for two things: keeping the site working, and product analytics through PostHog and Google Analytics so we can count page views, button presses and which pages people leave from.

Google Analytics sets its own cookie to tell one visit apart from the next, and it receives the page you viewed, the buttons you pressed, the country or region your internet address points to, and your browser and device type. It does not receive your email address, and it is not used for advertising: Google Signals and ad personalisation are switched off on our property, so the data stays inside our own reporting.

In the app, PostHog receives only events from a fixed list, such as a log being saved or a screen being opened. The app never sends your photos, Bristol types, colours, check-in answers or locations to analytics, and it switches off PostHog's location lookup from your internet address.

We do not run advertising cookies and we do not let third parties track you across other websites or apps. You can block or clear cookies in your browser, and where the law requires a consent banner you will get one and your choice will be respected.

Children

You must be 13 or older to use Butt Talks, and the app asks for your birth year before you can continue. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone younger.

Teenagers get extra protection. If your birth year means you could be under 18, you cannot make your poop map public, and your city is never shown to other people. Your nickname, avatar and streaks can still appear on leaderboards unless you turn that off.

If you believe a child under 13 has given us their data, write to support@butttalkstv.com and we will close the account and erase its contents.

Where your data goes

Our providers operate internationally, so your data may be processed in a country other than your own, including the United States. Where data leaves the UK or the European Economic Area, we rely on the safeguards the law provides, such as standard contractual clauses or an adequacy decision.

Security

Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Database rules mean each account can read only its own logs, locations and stool photos. Access to production systems is limited to the few people who need it to keep the service running, and no member of our team browses your photographs.

No system is perfectly secure, and we will not pretend otherwise. If there is a breach that puts you at risk, we will tell you and, where the law requires, the relevant regulator, and we will tell you what actually happened.

Changes to this policy

We will update this policy as the product changes. If a change affects your photographs, what other people can see, your rights or who processes your data, we will tell you by email or in the app before it takes effect, rather than quietly editing this page.
